And this is actually old news, but ... remember my drawing of the dolled-up girl in green? Well, much to my shock and amusement, that little joke entry of mine actually made the Top 150 out of about 7,300 total entries, and garnered me 80-some comments and a few unexpected fans. This, I should point out, is after my two serious attempts for the previous Elements contest got absolutely nowhere. I'm really not sure what to make of how the world works anymore, but ... yay?

This one is another fancy, lacy deal like my last two drawings. To Elizabeth: This started out as the chibi!Mana you asked for, but then it deviated and became more like Teru instead. Sorry, I'll give Mana another shot soon.

As for this other one, the joke will only be apparent to those who have watched the numerous 5-7 minute doses of crack known as "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series." Despite never having watched a single actual Yu-Gi-Oh! episode, now I can't even THINK about Yu-Gi-Oh! without breaking into fits of manic laughter. (Why? Go here at your own risk.) And of course I had to pick on Kaiba ... because antiheroes are the best.

Whaaaaaaat, more?

Er, yes. My Graffiti addiction has been officially diagnosed now. To those for whom little artsy things aren't really their cup of tea, my apologies if these posts keep popping up like toadstools on your friends page. And if you've been commenting on these ... much appreciation! I don't really write much fic anymore, so this is the only way I can really share something that I've put significant effort into.

So for this time, the theme is ...

... Yay. Another new style. Based on the J-rock guitarist Hizaki, who is male (and whose face reminds me too much of Ayumi Hamasaki), as well as those unnervingly pretty things known as ball-jointed dolls (i.e., Super Dollfie).

This first one was drawn for a Facebook friend.

This one is a just-for-fun gag entry in the Graffiti ReGeneration contest; the theme is "green" and it's all about saving the world one plastic bottle at a time (the contest is being sponsored by Dell), so I thought I might as well have a bit of fun with it, even though there is no "cute" or "humorous" contest category this time around.

Feedback is always welcomed, including criticism. Especially criticism. It speeds up the process of improvement.

The latest Graffiti contest on Facebook has "Earth, Air, Fire, Water" as its theme. And since I simply couldn't resist, here are my two entries. I can't say I'm banking on winning anything, but it's still fun to participate and put my creativity to the test.

This is my more serious entry. Fire is based on the Greek chimaera, water on the Celtic kelpie, earth on a combination of Herne the Hunter (English, also generally known as the Horned God and a male nature deity) and the giant wolf Fenrir (Norse), and air/wind on the Aztec feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl.

And here are the little guys (there is a "Cute" category in the contest, after all, so I might as well exploit it). They are named, in order from left to right, Fireball, My Little Kelpie, Airemon, and Spot.

Actually, that's not at all what I had in mind when I was drawing the above graffiti (but oh well). Rather, I've started reading and enjoying Neil Gaiman's comic series The Sandman, and I thought I'd try my hand at an art style outside of my usual anime/manga-influenced comfort zone. (To any other Sandman readers out there, a virtual holiday noisemaker to you if you can identify the precise panel I used as the reference for drawing the angle of the face!)

Notes: As is probably clear to most people who have read Bel's fic, this fanart is a reinterpretation of this picture, presumably from the photoshoot at the end of the story. However, you may have noticed some differences that are the products of my artistic license. :)

For example, the clothes have been slightly simplified, and Junsu's collar has been drawn lower than it was in the original pic, because I wanted to be able to reveal a hint of the nape of his neck. In this, more bare skin isn't about sex appeal -- although you may certainly interpret it that way if you want to -- it's about a heightened sense of intimacy between the two subjects, a casual manner of dress that should make it evident that they are immensely comfortable with each other's presence, both physically and emotionally.

I also got rid of Yoochun's watch. Because it's obviously a woman's watch. XD;; No, in actuality, I omitted it so that it wouldn't draw attention away from the central point of the picture, which is the two hands clasped together. As far as the positions of the hands go, I did my best to reproduce them as faithfully as possible; there is nothing I would wish to change about them. The cradling curves of the wrists ... the way the tips of the thumbs just barely brush each other ... is it possible for two hands to kiss each other?

... Except this time, unlike the case with the (maybe?)schoolboy, I have a vague idea as to whom the drawing is based on. The person in question is quite possibly my interpretation of what Artemis Fowl (Jr.), adolescent Irish criminal mastermind extraordinaire and devious brainchild of author Eoin Colfer, would look like. The Artemis Fowl books (I believe there are currently five in the series) are relatively short but delightfully snarky reads, and I do hope you haven't missed out on them. However, in case you haven't read any of them and don't know who on earth young Arty is, you may also view the picture's subject as, perhaps, an alternate depiction of Cain from Kaori Yuki's Count/Earl Cain and Godchild manga series. And if you don't know who Cain is either ... then .... -_-;;

[EDIT] Idle comments: Roy was actually harder to draw than Ed ... probably because his character image is more difficult to convert into my art style of choice. Ed's eye (yes, his eye alone) presented its own troubles though. When I first drew it, I elongated Ed's lashes too far back, and only cursorily scratched out a line in the middle of his eyeball to represent the pupil, with the result that he looked like nothing so much as an Egyptian cat trying to lap up something from Roy's mouth. @_@ Now there's an image that's a bit difficult to swallow. Needless to say, I fixed that up posthaste. And finally ... the sketchiness is NOT because of my laziness. Maybe if I repeat that often enough, with sufficient emphasis, I can start to believe it myself.

Low maintenance -- wholly original, no disclaimers necessary, doesn't need fanfic written about him, doesn't even need a name or a dark past, credits only to yourself for adopting and to Dani for churning him out for no particular reason! And if anyone is profoundly annoying enough to accuse your lil' critter of being a rip-off of an existing anime character or his/her second cousin or his/her dog or his/her own seventy-sixth original character, Mary Sue/Gary Lou the Twelfth, you can direct the plaintiff to Dani, who will then proceed to chew that person a new one and inform him/her that the only animated character figure in her near vicinity that might have inspired the drawing at the moment of its conception was a Hello Kitty bag, and if his/her cousin/dog/"original" character bears that much resemblance to Hello Kitty than he/she has Dani's most heartfelt sympathies. The good, the bad, and the decidedly odd

The good: ... ... ... I forget. I'll get back to that.

The bad: T_T I think my writing muse (if ever I had one) has officially died, been cremated, and then had her ashes flushed down the toilet because I'm too cheap to bother with a funeral service. But I'm still drawing, so I guess I'll just rely on fanarts to get me by here. Oh! That reminds me of what the good part was!

The good (take two): I got a tablet a couple of days ago! *joyful jig* That should help in resolving a few of my more persistent artistic nightmares, and make working in Photoshop less of a pain in the bud. Now I just need to get used to it; I used poor Jaejoong for practice the first day I got it, and thus this little thing was born:

The decidedly odd: Well, I'm here -- I guess that counts as being pretty odd in itself. Fictional Yunjae fanart (my little pet project, complete at last)

I figure, if I'm going to make my [however brief] return to LJ worthwhile, I really ought to contribute something good. ^-^; So here it is, the best I've currently got. -- I think.

I sincerely hope they're recognizable, at least a little. I used the following magazine shoot as a loose reference:

Artist's notes: I tried to stay accurate (or as accurate as the semi-anime style would permit) to Yunho's and Jaejoong's actual physical features, facial structures, etc. -- but I'd have to say that's the only thing I did stay accurate to. Other than that, I was simply going for a fantasy setting that looked vaguely Asian. Thus, although Yunho and Jaejoong are very much as South Korean as ever they were, Yunho's garb looks vaguely Chinese, Jaejoong's robe looks vaguely Japanese, and their hairstyles look vaguely impossible (or at least, Jaejoong's does, what with the superfluously dangling but aesthetically agreeable hair ribbon and all; and as for Yunho, is that a nonexistent and selective breeze I spy?). I pray no one minds too much; just in case, I threw in the pretty colors to keep people happy and distracted.

Should I be here at the present moment? Most likely not. Nevertheless ... first things second, second things first. School can wait, or at least, it had better, seeing as it took up more than its fair share of my life this past week. Now is some quality ME time.

And belated MEME time. Hence:

1. "DEAD END" - DBSK - Because it's new. And because my common sense is telling me to wait for the cheaper Korean edition of the "Five in the Black" album to be released before buying, but the rest of me is all but dying in the process of waiting.
2. "Begin" - DBSK - Still ultimately one of my favorite DBSK songs, even alongside the appeal of their faster-paced works. My Jae bias might also have some hand in this.
3. The "Winter Sonata" soundtrack in general - Appreciation of beauty. Simple as that.
4. "Mood Rings" - Relient K - Universal truth in a nutshell. A peanut shell, if I must be specific.
5. "Choosey Lover" - DBSK - No explanation necessary for this one, I hope.
6. "Balloons" - DBSK - Alright, really. As if anyone really expected DBSK to take up less than half of this list.
7. "What U Want" - CSJH - I always did prefer this song over "Boomerang" or "The Club," for some reason.

I don't believe I will tag anyone at the moment. I might use the threat of doing so as leverage later on, though, so those on my f-list who haven't already done this ... beware? XD;

My Harvard interview was just this Tuesday, the 13th (how appropriate). I hardly dare say myself whether it went well or not; it wasn't disastrous, that's all I will venture for the time being. If Harvard does end up accepting me, then perhaps I can [mentally] laugh and grind the fact into Stanford's metaphorical face. If not, I will still count my blessings. After all, I have no intention of actually going to Harvard, whatever the case may turn out to be. Besides, if I am not mistaken, Kurt Vonnegut's novel Jailbird (fiction, of course) provided an intriguing breakdown of the humble population of the Federal Minimum Security Adult Correctional Facility. There were at least eight Harvard men tossed in there, the book's protagonist included. Plus an abundance of Ph.Ds, doctors and dentists enough to go around, too many lawyers to count ... Cute, if not precisely the best incentive for going to Harvard, or even for entering a particularly lucrative profession.

The irony in this? My interviewer (an attorney, incidentally) and I actually had a fascinating little discussion on Vonnegut, both of us being, naturally, avid readers. I don't recall whether I specifically brought up Jailbird. Just peachy for me, if in fact I did.

To conclude, a self-diagnosis (as good practice for when I will be a doctor, possibly also holed up in the Federal Minimum Security Adult Correctional Facility):

I am currently suffering the combined symptoms of senioritis and anti-senioritis. Just enough of the first to make every iota of schoolwork feel like the culmination of all tedium. Just enough of the second to be motivated to sacrifice life and limb in getting said schoolwork done to the best of my ability, solely for the purpose of proving to myself that I DON'T have senioritis.

What shall I do? Well, there isn't much that I CAN do except ensure that I don't allow the senioritis infection to overpower the anti-senioritis before the end of the school year -- or at least until the latter half of May, when AP exams will be over and done with. Or at least just for a couple more weeks, until spring break. I am a believer in incrementalism. That, Wicca, and world peace.

And in case I am struck by lightning or otherwise rendered incapable of showing up on LJ on the 21st ... ^-^ Happy birthday, Bel.

Darwin was right; evolution does occur. He just forgot to mention that it takes a whole lot of work to make it happen.

I'd already gone on a bit about the AP Government and Politics final exam, but since all grades are finally on the table now and have made me a reasonably happy person, I shall blather on about it one last time.

The evolution process starts with the first practice objective exam, on which I get, of all the infuriating things, the highest 4 (on the 1 to 5 AP scale) possible. So close, yet so far. No sweat, I think, I forgot to study, that's all. It's just practice, and besides, I consistently got high grades on all of my other tests.

Second practice objective. Studied for it. SAME EXACT SCORE. Now I'm worried. Even a bunch of non-stellar students are kicking my butt at this.

I waste a weekend on two more practice tests from my AP Gov test prep book. High 4, borderline 5, not exactly what I'm hoping for. I get upset, desperate, tearful, a little emotionally teetery, and study my rear off amid the waterworks.

The night before the real final, I take the last practice test in my prep book. Reasonably solid 5, and I'm feeling slightly better -- except that I haven't studied for ANY of the essays, which could be based on ANY of the sixty-some topics the teacher gave us. And I stay up past three thirty in the morning even without that, since AP Spanish and AP Literature/Composition also decided that AP Gov final day would be a nice day to schedule their tests, too.

It doesn't take more than rubbing a couple of brain cells together to figure out what I was cramming the afternoon before the final.

The final arrives. 6:30 to 9:00 at night, nonstop multiple choice and essays. Everyone present is either laughing hysterically in despair or hyperventilating. I am declaring to all of my skeptical friends that I am "cool as a cucumber" -- even as I observe that my hands are shaking like wind-up toys. *sigh* Ah, overwrought high school seniors ... gotta love us.

Moving on. My teacher zaps the multiple choice scantrons, totals up scores, and informs me that I received the second highest score. I nearly faint with shock and joy in front of his desk -- but, realizing that doing so might cause some inconvenience for the good teacher, I decide to refrain.

Today, at long last, the finalized grades are posted. Wonder of all wonders, I got the top grade out of BOTH classes, and received perfect scores across the board on all four of my essays, to boot.

I'd only barely been retaining my spot as #1 in my AP Gov class before, so this makes me feel considerably more secure.

To all of the misery and self-doubt and annoying tears that have previously plagued me -- put THAT in your pipe and smoke it. And to my mother, who pressured me to put in all that extra practice, and offered to buy me ten MORE test prep books if that was what it would take to get me that 5 -- thank you, oh thank you, and please don't ever put me through that again; I don't think I could survive it a second time around.

... Oh, wait, but I will have to do this again, once National Exams roll around in May. Tsk, dash it all. Oh well, I can at least savor my happiness while it lasts, no?

And THAT, one and all, is evolution: going around in self-defeating circles for the entertainment of higher learning, much like a hamster on a wheel. Ah, but I do love hamsters.

The post-exam high

I just finished a two and a half hour final exam for AP American Government and Politics -- one multiple-choice objective test, four essays -- and now that I have well and truly pwned it (or so I would like to imagine until grades are posted and my happy illusions are shattered), I am feeling oddly exhilarated. Wonderfully so. High as a kite, yes I am ~~~

I tactfully poked fun at some more things today. Call it social commentary -- and for a justifiable purpose as well, since I mananged to tie it in to a poster presentation for AP Statistics class on prioritization of academics, athletics, etc. Drew five primary stereotypes of my school's population (I won't say which clique I identify with, if any, but feel free to guess): the nerd, the jock, the tortured artist (don't ask), the gamer geek, and the emo kid. Goodness, but the emo kid was fun to do. It must be something about ridiculously and unfashionably tight pants; yes, that must be it. The tortured artist was entertaining, too. Perhaps I'll scan them when I get the poster back; sharing is caring, after all.
